Obituary

Werthan Airth Crawford, also known as "Crawfy" a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend entered eternal rest on March 20, 2024, in his retired hometown of Tamarac, Florida. Werthan was born on May 10,1949, in the parish of Portland, Jamaica, West Indies. to his parents Sydney and Eulalee Crawford. He was raised alongside his five siblings, Victor, Vance, Junior, Hugh, and Marlene.

Werthan attended Norwich Primary School and continued his education at Bound Brook Senior School, where he graduated at fifteen. In his early years, Werthan was very independent and had to assist with providing for his household, in which he worked various jobs. He farmed the land and raised various livestock, which he later sold to the local University for research. Werthan then worked at Moo Young Auto Repair Shop as an auto body painter. By night, he worked at Delmar Movie Theater, where he ran the reels for all the shows. He later left the theater and began working at Three Star Bakery as their bread delivery driver. This in turn gave Werthan the opportunity to travel throughout the Portland parish of Jamaica. He had the pleasure of encountering many wonderful people on his route as they felt comfortable approaching him because of his kind and lovable demeanor. In 1967, Werthan met Erica. They were about the tender age of sixteen; while he walked her home one evening after a bingo night in the town square, they began courting which would evolve into a lifetime of love. They later gave birth to their first son, Courtney. Werthan and Erica joined in holy matrimony on March 19, 1979.

In 1980, Werthan migrated from Jamaica to New York City where he joined his wife and son to begin a new life. A year later, they welcomed their second son, Jarell. Together, their union was not just a marriage but a partnership that flourished in love, respect, and mutual support. Werthan was a pillar in the neighborhood where they resided on Willmohr Street, in Brooklyn, NY. Werthan was a devoted father who also stepped in to guide and shape many young men in the community. His commitment to nurturing the youth remained evident and consistent throughout his second residence in Mill Basin, Brooklyn, New York. He was held on a pedestal in the neighborhood. Without realizing it, he became a role model by exuding values of how a black man should provide for and protect his family. Werthan impacted other families by offering a listening ear and encouragement.

The family held such a deep significance to Werthan, and his devotion manifested in numerous ways, such as making sacrifices to ensure their happiness came first. Trips to New Jersey, Virginia, Boston, and of course back to Jamaica, were treasured immensely. Gathering for barbeques, birthday parties, holidays, and special occasions to create unforgettable memories. Werthan's hobbies outside of family included cooking, storytelling, cracking jokes, listening to music, and playing his daily lotto. He also had a distinguished presence which added to his magnetic charm. He took pride in his attire and that was reflected in his impeccable taste and style. Werthan's favorite quote was, "No worries, mon, everything gonna be alright." As he adored his two sons, he could never fathom how some parents simply put their children out on the street. Werthan would tell Erica in his native Jamaican accent "Mi bring two bwoy inna de wurl and mi nuh care how old dem git mi, woulda neva put dem pon di street." This was his vow to honor his boys regardless of the circumstances.

Professionally, Werthan found his passion in cars, known for his pivotal role as the Chief Auto Body Specialist for Alladin Auto Body in 1980, located in Brooklyn, NY. He was blessed to have the gift and talent for painting. He poured his heart and soul into his work. Werthan admired classic vehicles and understood mechanics. He attended many certificate programs that would enhance his knowledge as a skilled painter. One of them was the P.P.G School for specialty painting in Savannah, GA, where he showed his expertise and keen eye for color mixing and was recognized by the staff. After being offered a full-time position, Werthan politely declined as he felt it would be unnecessary to relocate his family.

His success afforded him to be financially sound, and every week, he made certain to send money back home to Jamaica. He continued his career at Alladin Auto Body until he retired in 2012.

After retiring, Werthen and Erica relocated to Tamarac, Florida, to be closer to his sister-in-law Sylvia. They resided in a community with friendly neighbors. The view of the lake from their condominium possessed a warm yet tranquil tone. Werthan had access to all the amazing amenities, scenic surroundings, social opportunities, and shopping centers. He remained physically and mentally engaged by swimming, group activities such as dances, bus rides to the casino, and game nights. Werthan was also very spiritual. He was a devout Christian and became a member at Community Christian Church. He made certain that he remained steadfast with the word of God by reading his scriptures every day and praying every night over his family. Werthan believed in being of service and wore his heart on his sleeve. He touched many individuals with his generosity. Werthan's ability to touch every family member and friend did not go unnoticed. He would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need. His acts of kindness knew no bounds, as he exemplified the spirit of selflessness. Werthan had a remarkable way of uplifting others whether through his humor, or his willingness to go the extra mile to put a smile on someone's face.

Werthan's life was one of dedication, compassion, integrity, honesty, and loyalty. His unwavering commitment to his family, friends, and community were evident, and he planted seeds in the hearts of those who knew him in this life experience. Werthan is proceeded in death by his loving parents and brother Victor Park. He is survived by his spouse Erica Crawford, his two sons, Courtney (Veleka), and Jarell (Taryn) Crawford.
