Oai Hong Phi, 84, of Parkland, FL entered into eternal rest in the Lord's House on Saturday, January 21, 2023. He is survived by his Wife of 55 years, Quan Le, as well as his children: Quynh-Tran Leigh Phi, Quy-Tran Susu Woodward, and Christopher Quoc Oai Phi. Also left to cherish his memory are his 4 grandchildren: Amanda, Matt, Thuy-Tien, and Brandon.
Oai was born on April 25, 1938 in Saigon, Vietnam, to his parents Dum Nguyen and Oan Phi. He was the oldest of fifteen children. He attended the French Yersin school in Dalat before getting accepted to dental school. It was around this time, at the age of 21, that he first noticed Quan Le, his future wife. Both Oai and a classmate vied for the attention of this pretty young lady who, at the time, was clueless of her beauty and their interests. To be fair and honorable, both men agreed that he who gains acceptance into Dental school first would earn first dibs at introducing himself to Quan. Oai won. Oai would go on to attend military school and become an army medic in the Vietnam War. In 1967, Oai and Quan were married. In 1975, not long after the birth of their second daughter, with only $20 to their name, this young couple made the very difficult decision to leave the only home they ever knew to seek a better life in the United States. Together, after much hard work, set-backs, and perseverance, their dream was realized for their two daughters and a son who was born here in the U.S. Oai was employed full-time as a dentist by South Florida State Hospital in 1981 where he remained until his resignation in August 2022. He also owned a private dental practice from 1984-2015 where he worked part-time. Dr. Oai Phi was well-known in the community as the "Painless Dentist", a label he was very proud of and often repeated. He also regularly provided services on a sliding-fee scale for those who would otherwise not be able to afford dental work.
Oai was a kind and quiet man of few words. He had a gentle, sweet, caring spirit that was undeniable. He was pure in his empathy toward those less fortunate (animals included) and had not one pretentious bone about him. His love language was to never say "no" to his family and friends while reserving very little for himself; he asked for nothing in return. When the going got tough or life presented challenges, he never complained. Oai did not hold grudges, and he was never vindictive. He saw only the good while ignoring the bad, in every person, in every situation; unwaveringly optimistic even when chances for a positive outcome seemed bleak. Besides his family, Oai loved cinema, sketching, and karaoke. His favorite pastimes included hosting and attending regular parties with karaoke and dancing. He was great at doing the Cha-cha-cha! Most of all, he loved family movie nights (always with a warm cup of coffee). Oai will be sorely missed by his wife, his children and all those who loved him.
