IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Marie Lydie
Gaspard
May 8, 1931 – April 11, 2023
Marie-Lydie Gaspard, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to many, left this world on April 11, 2023. She was 91 years old.
Marie-Lydie, Didie as she was affectionately known to her family, was born in Jérémie, Haiti. She was a proud graduate of 'L'École Élie Dubois' where she studied Education and Home Economics. In 1959, she married the love of her life, Michel Gaspard, and together the couple settled in Port au-Prince where they raised their four children in their family home in Delmas.
Didie was a teacher by trade. She taught middle school for many years. She switched career as her children were growing up and worked in the public sector for 20 years until she retired as the Excutive Assistant to the Minister of Public Works. But Didie's true calling was to be a wife and mother and to care for her home. She was devoted to her husband Michel with whom she was married for 60 years. She selflessly and courageously cared for him during the long illness that preceded his death in 2019. Her children were a pride and joy and all who knew her knew how close she was to them.
Didie was an artist. She loved to sing and had the most beautiful soprano voice. She loved to paint and the beautiful paintings that decorated her home spoke of her artistic soul. She loved to cook and to gather extended family and friends for weekly Sunday dinners around her table. She loved to sew and she loved to embroider. She sewed her children's clothes when they were growing up and her children are proud owners of exquisitely embroidered table linens she gifted them over the years. She loved to write. She was Reporting Secretary for L'Association des Anciennes d'Elie Dubois, her Alma Mater alumni club, and regaled them with poetically written reports at their monthly meetings for over thirty years. She faithfully wrote beautiful greeting cards with thoughtfully expressed sentiments to her large circle of family and friends for every birthday and every anniversary.
She was strong and faced adversity with steadfastness and courage. She was generous to a fault and never refused to lend a hand to any who asked. Many relied on her generosity and empathy in their time of need.
She was an avid reader and a meticulous record keeper. She had a great sense of humor and she loved stories. She was kind. She loved deeply and was deeply loved. Her light has left this world but her family and friends will forever cherish her memory.
