Juana A. de Avilán, 94, of Coral Springs, FL, entered into eternal rest on Monday, December 16, 2024. A devoted and loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Juana dedicated her life to fostering unity, love, faith, and strength within her family.
Born on June 24, 1930, in Bogotá, Colombia, Juana was the cherished daughter of Rosario and Joselyn Avendaño. She shared 56 years of marriage with her beloved husband, Benedicto Avilán, who preceded her in death. Juana was a pillar of love and dedication to her family and community.
She is survived by her six children: Marleny Cortes, Martha Lucía Rush, María Teresa Ferguson, María Elvira Cotzin, María Paula Manna, and Isabel Possinger. Her legacy continues through her 10 grandchildren: Juan Carlos Arredondo, Marcela Casas, Jennifer Cotzin (Zwecker), Jessica Cotzin, Melissa Rush, Stephanie Rush, John Michael Manna, Cynthia Ferguson, Marianna Cortes, and Bryan Cortes, as well as her six great-grandchildren: Sebastián and Catalina Casas, Oliver and Ella Tinchbeck, and Henry and Sienna Zwecker, all of whom will carry her memory forward.
Juana was known for her joyful spirit, generosity, and love of life. She cherished reading, cooking, and music, which brought joy to her family and friends. Her kind heart was evident in her dedication to helping others, especially underserved children. Juana was a steadfast supporter of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and made it her mission to bring joy to children in need, particularly during the Christmas season, through thoughtful gifts and donations.
Her life was a shining example of love, sacrifice, and selflessness. Juana instilled in her family the importance of unity and closeness, values that continue to bond them today. Her warmth and compassion will remain forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
A celebration of Juana's life will be held on Friday, January 3, 2025, from 3:00 to 6:00 PM at Coral Springs Funeral Home.
A private Mass in her honor will take place on Friday, January 10, 2025, at 10:00 AM at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Coral Springs. Burial will follow in a private ceremony for her immediate family.
Juana will be deeply missed, but her legacy of love and kindness will live on in the lives she touched.
