John Hendricks House, veteran of WWII and the Korean War, small businessman, devoted husband of Myriam Orvin House and beloved father to Stuart House, Kevin House, Heyward House and Sheridan H. Loudon, passed away Monday, 6 January 2014 in Coral Springs, Florida at the age of 86. Known as "Hendricks" to friends and relatives, he was born on 23 January 1927 in Morehead City, North Carolina and raised in Beaufort, NC. Hendricks was a graduate of Beaufort High School in 1943, entered the Citadel at age 16, enlisted as a rifleman, shipped to the European Theater of Operations at age 17, and separated from the Army as a buck sergeant at age 18. He re-entered the Citadel and graduated in 1950, but was then recalled to active duty as a commissioned officer in the US Army, separating in 1952 as First Lieutenant House, Infantry. Returning to civilian life, Hendricks started a career in the hospitality industry as manager for the Orvin Inn Motel in Charlotte, NC. He served as president of both the NC and the Southern Innkeepers Association, and as a board member of the American Hotel Association. In 1970, Hendricks embarked on a third career. He became a real estate broker certified by the state of South Carolina and later a residential property appraiser. After 50 years as a successful businessman, Hendricks retired in 2003 and moved to southern Florida. Hendricks was active in the support of Boy Scouts. He was an assistant troop leader of Troop 116, Charlotte NC, leading many camping trips in the Pisgah National Forest Smokey Mountains, the Outer Banks of NC, and many points in between. His leadership guided this troop of over 50 scouts for many years, and inspired many scouts to stay with scouting and become Eagle scouts. Hendricks was a lifelong Mason and Shriner. Hendricks loved boats and enjoyed sailing in Low Country waters. He was a life member of the James Island Yacht Club and longtime member of the Carolina Yacht Club, where you could find him many Saturday afternoons playing a spirited game of Hearts while sipping a cold beer with close friends. Hendricks, also known as "Tosh" by family, is survived by his wife of 62 years, Myriam Orvin House, one daughter Sheridan House Loudon, three sons Heyward Hendricks House, Kevin Addison House, and Stuart Nelson House, seven grandchildren, Alex, Christopher, Rebecca, Ryan, Sara, Allison, and Angelina, and two great-grandchildren, Sara Elizabeth and Carter James. Hendricks is also survived by one brother, Joseph House and two sisters, Elizabeth House Ward and Letitia House Radford, and nearly two dozen nephews and nieces. Rest in Peace Hendricks.
