Obituary

James Frederick Johnston, age 84, lovingly known as Dad, passed away on May 10, 2026, after a life defined by love for his family, service to others, generosity, and an unwavering work ethic.

James was born on June 28, 1941, in Braintree, Massachusetts, to Mary Johnston and James C. Johnston. He shared 61 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Sandra Johnston, together, they built a close, supportive family filled with loyalty, laughter, and love.

He is survived by his daughters, Lisa Oldoni ( Louis Oldoni), Kelly Plasencia, and Robin Johnston (Amy O’Day), and was preceded in death by his daughter, Maria Luna. To his daughters, Dad was more than a father, he was their lifelong go-to contractor, builder, and master electrician. Whether it was fixing something that broke, building a home, wiring a project, or offering trusted advice, he was always just a phone call away, happy to help and proud to do so.

James was a proud grandfather to six grandchildren: Kayla Johnston, Nicholas Oldoni, Kelsey Plasencia, Amanda Plasencia, Joshua Plasencia, and Christian Luna, each of whom he loved deeply and took great pride in.

In his younger years, James honorably served in the United States Navy, sailing aboard the USS Canberra—an experience he carried with pride throughout his life. After his military service, he continued serving others as a firefighter with the Braintree Fire Department, before building a long and respected career as a Licensed General Contractor. His expertise eventually led him to become a State of Florida–Certified Building Inspector and plans examiner, where he was known for his knowledge, professionalism, and ability to solve just about any problem.

James was generous to a fault and never hesitated to help others. His kindness extended to animals as well. A devoted animal lover, he adopted seven cats, each treated as family, and lovingly cared for countless ducks in his neighborhood. They knew his routine well—gathering at the back porch at feeding time, certain Dad would be there with corn.

Above all, James loved his family fiercely. He will be remembered for his steady presence, warm heart, gentle humor, and the quiet pride he took in serving his country, his community, and those he loved most.

James will be laid to rest with military honors on Thursday, May 21, at 10:00 AM at the South Florida National Veterans Cemetery. Please gather in Lane 5. A celebration of life will follow, at the Rowe Center in Coconut creek where family and friends will gather to share memories and honor a life well lived.

His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched, the family he cherished, and the countless acts of care and generosity that defined who he was.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the late James Johnston. It is an honor for Coral Springs Funeral Home to be entrusted with the arrangements for his final services. We invite you to offer your messages of sympathy and support by sharing a condolence in his online guestbook.
