Obituary

Winston George Whittaker, known as George, Uncle George, or Dad, was born in October 1941 in Guantanamo, Cuba, to his parents Alfred and Marrie (Foster) Whittaker. What day we really don't know. Some papers say the 16th, the US Government says the 19th, and we usually celebrated the 29th, (although he tried to get away with celebrating on the 19th and the 29th). While this all means that he is technically 80 years old, it really doesn't matter because if you know anything about George and his family, age is just a suggestion.

George attended primary school in Jamaica, West Indies, before moving to London and then to New York where he joined the Air Force and completed his GED. He separated active duty after 4 years and later joined the Air Force Reserve where he retired after 25 years. While on active duty, George trained as a photographer and received numerous letters of appreciation, but unfortunately no promotion. So, he courageously separated from the Air Force and started his own business as a photographer, and then owner of GW Color Lab in New York City. Missing the camaraderie of the military, he joined the Air Force Reserve in 1976 and served for another 25 years as a member of the Aerial Port Squadron at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in New Jersey (Go Port Dawgs!!!).

In New York, George met Daphney who came as a package with two children, Noel and Lorna, and then they had two children Donna and David. All four were raised together as his own in Cambria Heights NY in the first house he ever bought on 221st Street where life-long friends gathered for parties, card games, and celebrations. Later in life George moved to Fort Lauderdale, FL and met his last and late wife Enid, whom he married in 2010. Ms Enid came as a package too with six adult children whom he also loved as his own.

A common thread in all those who remember George is this: He was fun, and he was loved. He loved to laugh, play games, dance, and travel. Wherever he was, there was sure to be a game of dominos, pinochle, spades, or chess, or maybe some music, dancing, and dining going on. Pinochle was one of his favorite card games, although he could play just about any card game there was. Many a night was spent playing dominoes in the basement with friends giving "six love" and making "compulsory" moves. You could hear his voice, his laugh, and the dominos slamming the table throughout the house!

He got to travel extensively through the military to places like Korea, Germany, England, and Italy with people who became life-long friends and Aunts and Uncles to his kids. They were a part of his village.

Photography was his profession and his passion.  At almost every social event, you would find him with his camera devoted to capturing the true essence of love and togetherness of his beloved family and dear friends.  With this special gift of his, he ensured those moments could be remembered forever.  Today we remember him.

Winston George Whittaker entered into eternal rest on Sunday, March 27, 2022. He is survived by his children Noel, Lorna, Donna, and David; and also Liz, Sandra, Jeffrey, Sonya, and Bob; grandsons Robert, KJ, Jayson, and Nicholas; granddaughter Iris, and twelve more grandchildren he inherited with Enid. He is also survived by his former wife Daphney, sister Elsie, niece Julie, nephew Garry, and eight more nieces and nephews from his late sister Pearl. Also left to cherish his memory are a host of family and friends. He is preceded in death by his wife Enid, Enid's son Michael, and his siblings Clement Whittaker and Pearl Pryce.
