Obituary

David L. Sanborn, 77, of Parkland Florida entered into Eternal Life on, January 4, 2024. He is survived by his adoring wife, Janice Sanborn. He was a wonderful step-father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother-in-law, and uncle.

Born in Denver, Colorado on August 4, 1946 to Dr. Duane and Martha Sanborn, a United States Navy family, he grew up in many places, as the family was transferred every two years throughout the country and across the globe. He was a very loving brother to his younger sister, Kay, who predeceased him.

As a boy growing up, he was the head Altar Boy at his church, attained the distinguished rank of Eagle Scout in the Boys' Scouts of America, played baseball, and was a budding artist. He had a flair for painting and writing stories. He graduated from McLean High School in McLean VA. In 1968 he graduated from the University of Denver with a degree in History and Political Science.  While at University, he was a valued member of the college football team. Prior to his graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and became a naval aviator for the Navy, serving 4 tours as a combat attack pilot in Vietnam. During his active duty he earned a second degree in Aeronautical Engineering. He was awarded 12 Air Medals and the Distinguished Service Award for his service. He retired from the Military as Lieutenant Commander in 1988 after 20+ years of service at sea and in the air.

Still too young to retire, he went to work for the Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) in San Francisco as their Chief Safety Officer, working there for 24 years until his retirement in 2012. David was an avid hot air ballooner and was past president of the New Mexico Hot Air Ballooning Club.

David had a love of life and people. In 2013 he moved to Florida and started his golden retirement years. He remained a member of the Navy League for 50 years. He served on the Board of Governors at the Coral Ridge Yacht Club in Ft. Lauderdale, where he formed many friendships. Two years before his passing, he and his wife became members of the Italian-American Civic League of Ft. Lauderdale. He loved parties and big family gatherings.

David will be remembered for being thoughtful, sentimental, considerate to all, smart, ready to help, having a great sense of humor, and having eye-opening insights.
