Carlos Manuel Medina, 66, of Coral Springs, FL passed away on Monday, July 7, 2014 at University Hospital in Tamarac after a brief illness. Carlos was born on March 8, 1948 in San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico to Carlos and Santa Medina. At the tender age of 5, Carlos moved to New York with his family. While in the local store with his father around age 10, he saw a young girl walking down the street that he told his father he was going to marry. Shortly thereafter, Carlos and Maria (the girl on the street) met at school. They were inseparable from that moment. After finishing school, they married and began a family of their own. Carlos spent his life working very hard as a mechanic to provide for his family. He worked for the Parks Department and then for the Transit Authority in New York City. After his retirement in 2005, Carlos and Maria moved to South Florida to be closer to their children who had already migrated south. Being a mechanic, Carlos had a passion for cars and motorcyles. He would intentionally buy older vehicles that needed work and this soon began his vast collection that he prided himself on. Carlos was also a talented muscian, namely with percussion instruments. He and his brother-in-law started a band together and would often play for family get togethers. At these functions, he was also known to be the life of the party with his charismatic ways and fantastic sense of humor. Carlos was an avid Met fan (although some would say he was a Yankee fan in disguise) and his favorite past times were playing dominoes, going bowling and watching Westerns. Truth be told, Carlos was a jack of all trades; he was the family plumber, electrician, and go-to guru on all things that required a 'tune-up.' A man of great faith, he was a parishioner at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton along with his wife, who is in the Church Choir. Carlos will long be remembered as a dedicated and loving family man. A wonderful father and beloved son, this friendly gentleman will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. Carlos is survived by his beloved wife, Maria Virginia Medina his children, Carlos A. (Helena) Medina, Scott A. (Katia) Medina, and Melissa J. (Freddy) Medina-Ponton his grandchildren, Kassandra D. Medina, Elena J. Medina, Bryan D. Ponton, and Brenden M. Ponton his siblings, Gloria, Iris, Angel, Freddy, and Anna and his dog, Brea. Carlos was preceded in death by his parents, Carlos and Santa Medina and his dog, Stormie. Friends may call on Thursday, July 10, 2014 from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Coral Springs Funeral Home, 1420 N. University Drive, Coral Springs, FL 33071.
