Vélez Montalvo
August 9, 1929 – January 12, 2022
Dr. Aida Luz Velez Montalvo (Aida V. Otero), 92, a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, teacher, friend and loyal Servant of the Lord entered into eternal rest on Wednesday January 12, 2022. She is survived by her daughter Aida Fernandez Ramos and son-in law Hector Ramos, grandchildren Shakira Aida Ramos Crespo, her husband Erik Crespo, and Yamil F. Ramos and her great-granddaughter Yamilet M. Ramos. She is survived by her siblings Enery Velez, Dr. Jorge Luis Velez, Luz Velez-Valentin and Aida Rodriguez and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded by Gerardo Perez, Juanita Velez, Rafael Velez and Carmen Luisa Velez.
Aida was born August 9, 1929 in Santurce, Puerto Rico to her parents Luis Velez Vera and Matilde Montalvo Pantoja. She attended Central High School and graduated from the University of Puerto Rico with a degree in B.A in Education. She then when on to graduate with a Master Degree in Education from New York University and a Doctor degree in Ministry from Christian Bible College and Seminary. She was an English as a Second Language teacher for many years in Puerto Rico until becoming Assistant Director of the teacher's exchange program at the Department of Education of Puerto Rico. In 1971, she relocated to Hartford, CT to become the Team Leader of Bilingual Curriculum Development Department to help develop the first bilingual program. Later on becoming an elementary school teacher at Martin Luther King School. In 1988 was recognized as Hartford Teacher of the Year. After retirement, she relocated to Florida.
She was passionate about singing and serving the Lord. In her early years, she sang professionally in Puerto Rico. She was a Pastor and a member of Church of God. She will be remembered by her passion for the Lord, her love and dedication to her family and especially to her great-granddaughter. She enjoyed her time with her friends at Park Summit, Lime Bay and Orlando.
In lieu of flowers her family requests donations be made to the Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF).
Celebration of life will be held at Coral Spring Funeral Home on Wednesday January 26, 2022 from 2-4PM.
